A legume genomics resource: The Chickpea Root Expressed Sequence Tag Database Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Jayashree,B; Buhariwalla,Hutokshi K; Shinde,Sanjeev; Crouch,Jonathan H.
Chickpea, a lesser-studied grain legume, is being investigated due to its taxonomic proximity with the model legume genome Medicago truncatula and its ability to endure and grow in relatively low soil water contents making it a model legume crop for the study of agronomic response to drought stress. Public databases currently contain very few sequences from chickpea associated with expression in root tissues. However, root traits are likely to be one of the most important components of drought tolerance in chickpea. Thus, we have generated a set of over 2800 chickpea expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from a library constructed after subtractive suppressive hybridization (SSH) of root tissue from two closely related chickpea genotypes possessing different...

Are U.S. Corn and Soybeans Becoming More Drought Tolerant? AgEcon
Yu, Tian; Babcock, Bruce A..
An objective drought index that measures the dry and hot conditions adversely affecting crop yields is used in a regression analysis to test whether corn and soybeans have become more drought tolerant. Results indicate that corn yield losses, whether measured in quantity terms or as a percentage of mean yield, have decreased. The null hypothesis that the absolute level of soybean yield losses due to drought has not changed cannot be rejected. But yield losses in percentage terms have decreased over time. Because drought is the primary cause of yield loss in the U.S. crop insurance program and because U.S. crop insurance rates assume that percentage of yield losses are constant over time, these results indicate that U.S. crop insurance rates in the Corn...

Drought resistance of sugar-cane crop for different levels of water availability in the soil REA
Barbosa,Fernando da S.; Coelho,Rubens D.; Maschio,Rafael; Lima,Carlos J. G. de S.; Silva,Everaldo M. da.
Soil water availability is the main cause of reduced productivity, and the early development period most sensitive to water deficit. This study aimed to evaluate the drought resistance of the varieties of sugar-cane RB867515 and SP81-3250 during the early development using different levels of water deficit on four soil depths. The experiment was conducted at the Department of Biosystems at Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (ESALQ/USP) in a greenhouse in soil classified as Oxisol, sandy loam texture (Series "Sertãozinho"). Once exhausted the level of available water in the soil, the dry strength of the studied strains are relatively low. Water balance with values less than -13 mm cause a significant decrease in the final population of plants,...

Impact of mycorrhizae and irrigation in the survival of seedlings of Pinus radiata D. Don subject to drought Gayana Botánica
ATALA,CRISTIAN; MUÑOZ-CAPPONI,EDGARDO; PEREIRA,GUILLERMO; NAVARRETE,EDUARDO; OSES,RÓMULO; MOLINA-MONTENEGRO,MARCO.
In drought condition, plants increase survival chance by adjusting their functional traits and by biological associations. Mycorrhizae association and artificial watering have been shown to increase plant survival under drought, especially at early developmental stages when plants are more susceptible. In Chile, Pinus radiata is the most important forest species. It is grown mainly in Central Chile, where precipitations are predicted to drop in 40% and change in frequency in the future due to climate change. Rhizopogon luteolus is an ectomycorrhizae usually associated with Pinus species and has been found to increase drought tolerance. We addressed the effect of R. luteolus inoculation on survival and functional traits of P. radiata seedlings exposed to...

Modifications in vapor diffusion resistence of leaves and water relations in barbados cherry plants under water stress Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
NOGUEIRA,REJANE J. MANSUR C.; MORAES,JOSÉ ANTÔNIO P. V. DE; BURITY,HÉLIO ALMEIDA; BEZERRA NETO,EGÍDIO.
Young sexually and assexually propagated Barbados cherry plants were submitted to water deficit (20 days without irrigation). During this period the accumulation of proline, water potential of branches, osmotic potential, the relative water content of leaves, the leaf diffusive resistance, the transpiration rate and leaf temperature in the cuvette were determined. In addition, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were measured in the porometer cuvette. The concentration of proline for both types of plants began to increase on the fifth day without watering, and reached 38.1 times the concentration in the control plants grown from seeds and 26.4 times the concentration in grafted plants on the tenth day without...

Patterns of tree seedling mortality in a temperate-mediterranean transition zone forest in Chile Gayana Botánica
PARADA,TERESA; LUSK,CHRISTOPHER H..
Seedling mortality in forests is the net result of an array of processes that vary spatially and temporally. We quantified emergence and mortality of seedlings at monthly intervals for two years, in a forest situated in the transition zone between the Mediterranean and temperate regions of Chile. We aimed to determine if survival of species responded differentially to seasonal water availability, to the spatial variation in light availability and to seedling density. The commonest species in the seedling bank were the Mediterranean-climate species Cryptocarya alba (61%) and the temperate-climate species Aextoxicon punctatum (29%). 279 of the 504 new seedlings that emerged during the two-year study died during the same period, corresponding to 55,4%...

PERFORMANCE OF ‘TUXPAN VALENCIA’ SWEET ORANGE GRAFTED ONTO 14 ROOTSTOCKS IN NORTHERN BAHIA, BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Frutic.
FRANÇA,NATIANA DE OLIVEIRA; AMORIM,MAURICIO DA SILVA; GIRARDI,EDUARDO AUGUSTO; PASSOS,ORLANDO SAMPAIO; SOARES FILHO,WALTER DOS SANTOS.
ABSTRACT In the State of Bahia, Brazil, the citrus industry is located on the north coast with the prevalence of the combination ‘Pera’ sweet orange on ‘Rangpur’ lime. Scion-rootstock diversification may contribute to the increase of yield and the extension of harvest season, as long as to decrease the risk associated to abiotic and biotic stresses. Therefore, the performance of ‘Tuxpan Valencia’ sweet orange grafted onto 14 rootstocks was evaluated in Rio Real – BA. Planting was performed in 2006 under rainfed cultivation on cohesive ultisol and tree spacing of 6.0 m x 4.0 m. Tree size, yield and fruit quality were evaluated in the period of 2010-2014, in addition to tree survival at nine years old and drought tolerance in the field based on leaf...

Photosynthesis and cell respiration modulated by water deficit in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cv. Cabernet Sauvignon Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Martim,Sílvia A.; Santos,Mirella P.; Peçanha,Anderson L.; Pommer,Celso; Campostrini,Eliemar; Viana,Alexandre P.; Façanha,Arnoldo R.; Bressan-Smith,Ricardo.
Winegrape productivity and quality has been related to the regulated deficit irrigation, with important implications for the plant bioenergetics. When water deficit is imposed to grapevine plants, alterations in overall photosynthesis and cell respiration are observed. The aim of this study was to assess the modulations promoted by water stress on photosynthesis and respiration in leaves of the cv. Cabernet Sauvignon (cv. CS) for better understanding the physiological responses related to its drought tolerance and quality improvement under water deficit. For this purpose, measurements of photosynthetic efficiency, leaf water potential, gas exchange and O2 consumption were carried out. Leaf water potential, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance,...

Photosynthetic capacity and water use efficiency in sugarcane genotypes subject to water deficit during early growth phase BABT
Silva,Marcelo de Almeida; Jifon,John Lonfover; Santos,Claudiana Moura dos; Jadoski,Cleber Junior; Silva,Jorge Alberto Gonçalves da.
The objective of this study was to compare the gas exchange, photosynthetic capacity and water potential of sugarcane genotypes cultivated under water deficit conditions imposed during the initial growth phase. Experiments were performed in a greenhouse using two sugarcane genotypes namely: HoCP93-776 (drought susceptible) and TCP02-4587 (drought tolerant). Sixty days after planting, two different water treatments were applied (i.e., with or without water deficit). At 0,30 and 60 days after the treatment, gas exchange variables were evaluated for their relationship with water use, intrinsic instantaneous water use efficiency and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency. The SPAD index, photosynthetic pigments, water potential and relative water content in...

QTL mapping for physiology, yield and plant architecture traits in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown under well-watered versus water-stress conditions Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Saeed,Muhammad; Guo,Wangzhen; Ullah,Ihsan; Tabbasam,Nabila; Zafar,Yusuf; Mehboob-ur-Rahman,; Zhang,Tianzhen.
Increasing scarcity of irrigation water is a major threat to sustainable production of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Identifying genomic regions contributing to abiotic stress tolerance will help develop cotton cultivars suitable for water-limited regions through molecular marker-assisted breeding. A molecular mapping F2 population was derived from an intraspecific cross of the drought sensitive G. hirsutum cv. FH-901 and drought tolerant G. hirsutum cv. RH-510. Field data were recorded on physiological traits (osmotic potential and osmotic adjustment); yield and its component traits (seedcotton yield, number of bolls/plant and boll weight); and plant architecture traits (plant height and number of nodes per plant) for F2, F2:3 and F2:4 generations under...
